Our Room 2 literacy class completed this text in term 1 as a whole class and forgot to post our video about – so here it is. We hope you enjoy it as we did!
Combined Auckland Maths Challenge
Yesterday, we participated in our final maths challenge for the year. This was held at St Peter’s College and our Maths teams were eager to get amongst it. It was a great showcase of brilliant mathematical young minds and our teams thoroughly enjoyed the tough challenges. Even better, our Year 7 team placed 3rd in an intense tie breaker. How awesome!
Check out our video for more.
Gravitational Force
Check out some extension work completed by Catherine and Emzjull.
Task description: This term for extension we had to do a project researching about Gravitational Force. For this task we had to have a partner to work with. Then when you have found your partner 1 of us had to make a new slide show called G-Force/ Gravitational force. Right when you have finished you then go to YouTube and find a video and movie that is showing G-Force and put the link in the slideshow. For this next slide what we had to do was find a short text about G-Force and also put the link inside the slideshow. Finally for this last slide we had to go to google and search for an article that explains and talks about what G-Force is and how G-Force works. This task for extension was exciting and interesting to do. What I really loved about this task was researching and finding interesting stuff about G-force.
South and East Auckland Maths Challenge
Ever wanted to hook competitive kids into maths? Now’s your chance!
Last week Pt England hosted the South and East Auckland Maths Challenge hosted by Katalina Ma from Auckland University. This is our 4th time joining the competition and our 2nd time hosting.
This time we had great competition from Panmure Bridge and Glen Taylor joining us for the first time. The South Auckland schools who also competed were South Auckland Middle School, Viscount, Mangere Central and De La Salle.
Below is a bit about the Maths Challenge.
Katalina and Josephina are the co-founders of maths challenge. Initially it started in south Auckland (SAMC) for year 9 and 10 Māori and Pasifika students with an objective to increase interest in competitive maths in preparation for the regional Mathex competition.
Since starting in 2019, maths challenge has since then expanded to include central and west schools for years 9 and 10 as well as year 7 and 8 in south Auckland. This year they are looking to expand again as we all know the real fun for maths starts in primary school! So they are on the hunt for any interested parties keen to provide an opportunity for your year 5 and 6 Māori and Pasifika learners.
The competition concept is very similar to mathex where it’s a team of 4 students with one student being the runner. There are 15 questions to complete in 20 minutes.
If you are a teacher, parent or student interested to join this competition, then please contact katalina.ma@auckland.ac.nz

Term 2: Beyond the Sky
Term 2 Theme – Beyond the Sky!
Hello Everyone and welcome back to term 2!! Our theme for this term is “Beyond the Sky” which means we are looking at space🌌 and learning the distance between the planets. To start the school day we went to the hall for our immersion assembly, it was so cool watching all the movies and performances the teachers had made for us.
The first movie we had was from SMT (Seinor Management Team)!!, They were dressed up in different costumes to do with the theme. Mr Burt was with his granddaughter and he has tubes along his back. Mrs Nua was dressed up as an astronaut, Mr Jacobson had a mic on his face and was in a cool outfit. Mr Somerville was in a normal outfit and showed us a bridge with evaporation.
The second one was team 1!! and they were showing us the different times zones and whatg the weather is like in 2 different parts of the world.
The third one was from team 2!! They did a movie going on an adventure to space using the school van which I didn’t know could fly! They looked at the different planets and asked questions about them.
The fourth one was team 3!! They did a very cool and amazing rap, It was so nice to hear and the lyrics were so good. They sang about the moon, sun and earth!!
The fifth one was… team 4!! They did a movie in a spaceship and looked at the different planets and gave us really cool facts about them too.
The last one was… team 5!! They also did a song about the planets, they rewrote the song “Love by Keyshia Cole” and the rewritten version was so nice to listen to.
Hope you have a better day than me!
G-byee!
Literacy: Butterflies – Patricia Grace
Check out Zohaidah’s literacy task!
Hey everyone! This week room 3’s literacy has been learning about a story called “Butterflies” It was written by the wonderful author “Patricia Grace”. Koakoa mai, koakoa atu – Bringing JOY to 2025!
Kiaora, Talofa, and Welcome to our Room 2 blog for 2025! We are a class of 28 unique individuals who make up the amazing Room 2 class for 2025! Our teacher Mrs Ilaoa has been at school for just over 10 years now and we are looking forward to getting her know better throughout the year.
Our value this year is Joy – Koakoa mai, koakoa atu. So far, we’ve had many sports teams already representing our school this year in tag, softball and cricket. Keep an eye out on our blog as we share more sports throughout this term.
This is also an exciting time as we get into Fiafia practices. It will be an awesome celebration of music, dance and singing from all cultures here at PES. We look forward to taking turns sharing our learning from different students in our class so watch this space!
For now, continue to spread joy this year and let’s Learn, Create and Share together!

Transformers!
Transform yourself on stage, into any character you want! Come along on our inquiry journey in Term 2!
Our Pt England Way is to always kick start the term with an immersion assembly. Today was no different. Our management team started off with an introduction of the topic. Our theme is Transformers which is all about the drama. My favourite one was team 3 with their Matilda act. Bobby-jon was eating a piece of the mistresses chocolate cake. He had gotten caught because he burped very loud and the mistress caught him. So as a punishment, he had to eat all the chocolate cake or he would get a different punishment. So as he tried his best to eat all the cake the rest of the teachers sang a song almost like a musical. He continued to eat and as the mistress came along getting in his face, he then smudged cake all over the mistresses face ending the act off with cheers and laughter.
Team 5 teachers acted act Cinderella on stage – but the Roald Dahl version. It was funny as and our teachers did a good job acting it all out. I am looking forward to our inquiry this term and learning more about performing arts/drama.

Mata i pusi – Word Art
Hi everyone! This week my literacy class has been reading a text called Mata I Pusi. It is about a girl who didn’t like herself because she was Samoan and palagi but she didn’t look Samoan enough so she got made fun of at school. Today I have made a wordart and my outline was a person. The reason why I Picked a person is because I think it is most related to the text. I put in about 12 keywords for the inside of my person. This basically means that the main girl is the person and all of those words are stuck inside of her and she is very stressed about it. Thank you for checking out our class blog. Bye!
